Theo's after-visit recap
Child Development Clinic — UW IHDD
Visit: July 2, 2026 · Next visit around December 29, 2026
All visits →The big picture
Theo is a curious, active kid. His understanding is strong; talking is coming more slowly, so we're finishing his developmental evaluation and getting school supports lined up before kindergarten. You are doing the right things.
Set up & appointments
Time-sensitive to-dos — do these first.
Ask the school district for an evaluation — in writing
Email or hand a letter to your district's special-services office asking for a developmental preschool evaluation. Social work can help you write it — see their tab below.
Practice at home
- ★
Model phrases one step longer than his
Model one step above what Theo says now — if he uses single words, use 2–3 word phrases ('big tower!', 'more juice?'). Offer choices so he has a reason to talk.
- ★
Keep the psychology evaluation appointment
The next session finishes Theo's developmental evaluation. Bring your notes and questions — the Notes section here is a good place to collect them.
Instructions from your specialists
Dr. Riley Osei
Strong understanding, slower talking — the evaluation will tell us how best to help.
- Keep routines predictable; tell Theo what's next in simple words.
- Praise every try to communicate — words, sounds, or gestures.
Behaviors to watch for
- Losing words he used to say
- Not responding to his name most of the time

Your notes
Write anything you want to remember or share with the care team — observations, changes, wins.
He's started lining up his toy cars and gets very upset if we move them. Also two new words this week: 'open' and 'more'.

Questions for the next visit
Save questions as they come to you — they'll be ready when you see the team.
How exactly do we ask the school district for an evaluation before kindergarten — is there a form or a letter?
